What does a used GWM actually cost to land?
Importers ask the same question in different words: the FOB price is only the starting line. The real number is the landed cost — unit price plus export handling, ocean freight, insurance, destination duty, and the last-mile charges that appear only when your broker files the entry. This overview covers the main GWM families we hold in stock — Tank, H6, Cannon, Fengjun, Big Dog, and Good Cat — and breaks down the cost components you should expect across each.
GWM Export is an independent exporter. We are not affiliated with Great Wall Motor. We buy from the China domestic market, hold units at our Tianjin and Guangzhou yards, and publish reference FOB prices, real mileage, and registration dates so you can compare before you commit. Every unit we stock is left-hand drive.
Below is a cost-component framework that applies to any of these models. Ranges are indicative, not quotes. Final numbers depend on model year, mileage, destination port, and current freight rates.
Cost components at a glance
| Cost component | Typical range (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price (FOB China) | $5,200–$35,000+ | Varies by model family, year, mileage, trim |
| MOQ | 1 unit (container) / 1 unit (RoRo) | Mixed loads possible for container |
| Sampling / inspection | $0–$150 | Photos and video provided; third-party inspection optional |
| Export handling & documentation | $300–$700 | Invoice, packing list, B/L, COO, export license |
| Ocean freight (RoRo) | $800–$2,500 | Route and season dependent |
| Ocean freight (container) | $1,500–$4,500 | 20ft or 40ft; shared with other units |
| Marine insurance | 0.3%–0.8% of CIF value | Recommended for all shipments |
| Destination duty | 5%–100% of CIF | Country and vehicle type specific |
| Port & clearance charges | $400–$1,200 | Terminal, broker, inspection, delivery order |
These are ranges, not promises. Duty in particular swings widely: used passenger cars may face 5% in some Gulf markets and well over 50% in parts of Africa and Latin America. Always confirm with your destination customs authority or a licensed broker before you buy.
Unit price: what drives the FOB number
For the Haval H6 — the highest-volume passenger model in our stock — we hold 219 units across model years 2018–2025, with reference FOB prices from $5,200 to $15,800. A 2020 H6 1.5GDIT Platinum Champion Version with 119,000 km sits at $6,800 FOB. A 2024 H6 1.5T 2WD Max with 4,000 km is $15,800 FOB. The gap between those two numbers is almost entirely mileage, year, and trim — not negotiation.
The same logic applies across the range. Tank models (Tank 300, Tank 500) carry a higher base because they are body-on-frame off-roaders with more complex drivetrains. Cannon pickups sit in the middle, popular for work use across Africa and the Middle East. Fengjun is the value workhorse — a 2021 Fengjun with 50,000 km and a 2023 Fengjun with 96,000 km are both in our current listings, and both are priced well below an equivalent-year H6. Big Dog occupies the lifestyle-SUV slot: boxy styling, higher ground clearance, positioned above the H6 in the domestic lineup. Good Cat (ORA) is the urban EV — smaller unit price, but EV-specific import rules apply.
MOQ and sampling
There is no minimum order quantity for a single unit. One car can ship RoRo or fill a container. If you are consolidating, a 40ft container can hold two to three smaller GWM models, which spreads the freight and documentation cost across units.
Sampling is not a paid step in our process. Every listing includes real photos and the odometer reading. If you want a third-party inspection before shipment, that is arranged at cost — typically $80–$150 depending on the inspector and location. We recommend it for any unit above $12,000 FOB or any vehicle shipping to a market with strict pre-shipment inspection rules.
Export handling and documentation
Every exported GWM leaves China with a standard document set: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading (B/L), certificate of origin (COO), and the export license. Depending on destination, you may also need a pre-shipment inspection certificate or a conformity certificate. Budget $300–$700 for the handling and documentation package. This is not a margin line — it reflects port fees, agent fees, and courier costs for original documents.
Your customs broker will ask for the B/L and COO first. If those two are clean, clearance is usually straightforward. Missing or mismatched documents are the most common cause of delay, so verify the chassis number and model year on the invoice against the vehicle before the container seals.
Shipping: RoRo vs container
RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) is the default for single units. The car is driven onto the vessel and secured. Cost ranges from $800 to $2,500 depending on route and season. It is cheaper but offers less protection from weather and handling.
Container shipping costs more — $1,500 to $4,500 for a 20ft or 40ft — but the vehicle is enclosed, and you can consolidate multiple units. For higher-value Tank models or any unit with aftermarket accessories, container is usually the better choice. We ship from Tianjin and Guangzhou. Which yard your unit leaves from affects transit time and the route to your destination port.
Duties and taxes at destination
This is the component that most often surprises first-time importers. Duty is calculated on CIF value (cost, insurance, freight), not FOB. So the freight and insurance you pay add to the taxable base.
Rates vary by country and vehicle type. Used pickups (Cannon) are often treated differently from passenger SUVs (H6, Tank). Some markets apply age-based depreciation schedules; others use a flat percentage. In several African and Latin American markets, total duty and tax can exceed 50% of CIF. In parts of the Gulf, it can be under 10%. There is no universal number. Check with your destination customs authority or a broker who has cleared GWM units before.
Landed-cost comparison: three realistic scenarios
Below are three illustrative scenarios using real reference FOB prices from our current stock. Freight, insurance, and duty are mid-range estimates for planning only.
Scenario A — 2020 H6 1.5GDIT, 119,000 km, $6,800 FOB, RoRo to a moderate-duty market - Unit: $6,800 - Export handling: $450 - Freight (RoRo): $1,400 - Insurance: $60 - CIF subtotal: $8,710 - Duty @ 30%: $2,613 - Port/clearance: $700 - Estimated landed: $12,023
Scenario B — 2024 H6 1.5T 2WD Max, 4,000 km, $15,800 FOB, container to a low-duty market - Unit: $15,800 - Export handling: $500 - Freight (container, shared): $2,200 - Insurance: $110 - CIF subtotal: $18,610 - Duty @ 10%: $1,861 - Port/clearance: $850 - Estimated landed: $21,321
Scenario C — 2021 Fengjun, 50,000 km, lower FOB, RoRo to a higher-duty market - Unit: $4,800 (indicative — confirm current listing) - Export handling: $400 - Freight (RoRo): $1,600 - Insurance: $55 - CIF subtotal: $6,855 - Duty @ 50%: $3,428 - Port/clearance: $900 - Estimated landed: $11,183
Notice that the cheapest FOB unit does not always produce the cheapest landed cost. In Scenario C, a lower purchase price is offset by a higher duty band. This is why we publish reference FOB prices alongside real mileage and model year — so you can run your own landed-cost math before you contact us.
What to verify before you commit
Ask for the odometer reading, registration date, and chassis number. Compare the photos against the listing. Confirm the steering position — all our units are LHD, and not every market registers LHD vehicles. Check your destination's age restrictions on used imports; some countries cap imports at 5 or 8 years from the registration date.
If you are comparing models, the H6 is the volume family with the widest year and price spread. The Cannon is the pickup workhorse. The Tank is the off-roader. Fengjun is the value entry. Big Dog is the lifestyle SUV. Good Cat is the urban EV.
We hold stock at Tianjin and Guangzhou and ship to Russia, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico, and Chile, among others.
